Today I had my post radiation check up. I had two PET scans and a CT scan. Thankfully these scans showed that I have NO metastases present in my body!! Yeah!! (that means the thyroid cancer was contained in thyroid and lymph nodes) This is great news for me! I have been cleared from radiology for the next six months. Meanwhile, the radioidine treatment that I took over the past week will continue to kill the thyroid cells (both good and bad) over the next few months. This is not painful and has no side effects.
In six months, I will be hospitalized for a low dose of radioidine that will be taken so a check up scan can be performed. During this scan, doctors will look to see that I have no traces of thyroid tissue left. If there is no tissue left, then I will be cleared from radiation indefinitely. If there is tissue left (my doctors tell me this is highly unlikely because most of my thyroid tissue was removed during surgery) then I will have another radioiodine treatment. So this six month check up is a big milestone for me.
In other news, I am begining to take thyroid hormones. I don't feel any significant changes yet, but that is normal. By mid-September I should have all my energy back! : )
