We have a new hobby in the Goad house. We love collecting sea glass on the rocky beaches here in Rhode Island. What is sea glass, you might wonder? It is not a natural substance, it is not made when lightning strikes the beach (sorry Sweet Home Alabama fans), and is not the tears of mermaids. It is really just trash. The colorful shards are old bottles and jars that have been discarded into the sea. Over time the sea tumbles them into smooth, frosted pebbles.
This is our collection so far. Most of the glass we find is green. Occasionally we find blue, white or brown.
We love looking for sea glass because to us it is like hunting treasure, it gets us out in nature and provides a bit of exercise. We have competitions to see who can find the biggest piece, most pebble like piece or the best color.
The aqua blue glass is our favorite.
Most of our pieces are really small. The two above are too jagged to be of any value.
My favorite pieces look like jelly beans like the one on the far right.
Our collection is small, but growing. We hope to fill a big jar with sea glass before we leave Rhode Island.
