Finally! I've been trying all day to get this cake right! The first cake is a pile of crumbs in the freezer. I told Tyler that he could save them for an ice cream topping. It is a German Black Forrest Cake made the German way (no cake mixes or cherry pie filling). Okay I Americanized it a little bit - two layers of cherry instead of one (although you can get it that way some places here). It is a light egg based cake with a sour cherry pie filling, whipped cream icing, milk chocolate shavings on the side and maraschino cherries on the top. It's not heavy on the sugar - which is nice. I had to convert all of the measurements from grams to cups. That was not fun, but isn't it pretty? I'm so proud. If you are lucky enough to be at my Granny Dot's house for Christmas or at Tyler's work right now then you will get a piece. (No, I am not bringing this cake to the States... I'm going to make another one) When I make it again it will probably be prettier. My mom will be around and she is MUCH better at cake decorating than I am. Plus since she is retiring her famous peppermint red velvet cake, she can pipe the whipped cream.
